NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - Despite some tough sweep competition, Fox's nail-biting "American Idol" results show Wednesday dismissed its rivals just as handily as it has done since January.

The hour-long "Idol" averaged 27.1 million viewers and a 10.5 rating/25 share in the coveted adults 18-49 demographic, according to preliminary data released Thursday by Nielsen Media Research.
That happened against a night of big competition on the other networks, including ABC's "Lost" and the season finales of NBC's "Law and Order," CBS's "Amazing Race," Fox's "Bones" and UPN's "America's Next Top Model."
"Idol," which will crown either Taylor Hicks of Birmingham, Ala., or Katherine McPhee of Los Angeles as winner next week, built to 28.7 million viewers and an 11.2/26 between 9:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. It also boosted Fox to another nightly win in viewership and the demo, with an average of 18 million viewers and a 6.8/18 in the demo.
That no doubt had an impact on ABC's "Lost," which sank to its lowest rating for an original episode all season in advance of next Wednesday's two-hour finale. The show averaged 14.2 million viewers and a 5.9/14 between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. (It lasted until 10:04 p.m., cutting into the series finale of "Invasion.") The rating was down 25% from its season-to-date average of 7.9/19.
The sledding was even tougher for CBS's "Amazing Race," which had to compete with both powerhouses for its two-hour season finale. "Amazing Race" averaged 9.1 million viewers and a 3.4/9 for its lowest finale rating for any of the nine "Race" episodes. Things were a little easier at 8 p.m., when "Race" averaged 8.9 million viewers and a 3.3/10 to come in second in the time period against NBC's "Deal or No Deal" (13.8 million, 4.1/12), Fox's "Bones" (8.9 million, 3.1/9) and ABC's "Alias" (5.5 million, 1.8/5). UPN's "America's Next Top Model" also had a finale, bringing in 5.7 million viewers and a 2.8/8.
Meanwhile, 10 p.m. belonged to the "Law & Order" finale (13.5 million, 4.5/12) which beat back a challenge from "CSI: NY" (12.8 million, 4.4/11). ABC's "Invasion" finale brought in 8.3 million viewers and a 3.3/9 in the demo, although that included the last four minutes of "Lost."
